I’m not the greatest swimmer, and I have limited time to train.
The hydro hip not only improved my form, it also got my breathing technique PERFECT.
The life guards at the lap swim made it a point to tell me they noticed a rapid improvement with my form.

And yes, if properly used with vigor and intensity, you can work your core to the point of near vomiting pretty quickly.
    – and that’s freeeekin’ AWESOME!!!

I have this and the Tech Toc.. First, this is not just a training aid for improving technique and form… this is actually is for building strength, and it also helps you work on timing your rotation with your arms.

The Tech Toc is simply for technique.. so it does have a limited role in training and I think once you advance in your technique the tech toc outlives itself for most ( though I am not a competitive swimmer, or a coach, so maybe I am wrong ). The Tech Toc was helpful for me understanding how to rotate, it really was a great tool. and I don’t think the Hydro Hip alone would have done it for me.

Now to the Hydro Hip. The fins give enough resistance that it does help work the core and the hip during rotation. I actually use it during my warmup before distance swims as well. It is a very simple product, that really looks silly at the pool, but it is very effective. And it has helped me alot with my stroke timing with the rotation. But even once my stroke is perfect, if ever, I will still use this to build strength..

If you really have poor rotation and you are not engaging/ connecting the hips, core and shoulder, and really at the beginner stage with swimming, then the Hydro Hip will probably be frustrating.

Make sure you wear this on the hips.. for men.. hips is not on the stomach. watch the videos on FINIS, if you wear this correctly you will not have issues with comfort or slipping.

Tech Toc or Hydro Hip? Actually you might need both.. I did. Tech Toc will help you learn how to rotate. I could always swim, but learning how to rotate and kick from the hips was a learning curve.. I didn’t have a coach or teacher.. so the Tech Toc helped me alot. I would never have been able to learn from the hydro hip. For improving the timing with the arms and rotation.. yes the Hydro Hip does that great. And for developing strength.. I will be using the Hydro Hip for a very long time.

    – Great training tool for swimming or triathlon

I recently purchased the Hydro Hip Belt under the suggestion of my triathlon coach. I found the previous reviews to be inaccurate– maybe the product has been improved since then. I had no problems with sizing (i have 40″ hips and the belt fits fine with 6-8″ to spare). Also, I’ve had no problems with the fins sliding around on belt.

I think this is a great tool to learn to ‘lead with the hips’ while doing freestyle, and to turn hips forcefully to increase Distance Per Stroke. My recommendation is to use this for only a small portion of your workout since its quite tiring to swim with this for long periods of time. The gains in efficiency and power are noticeable immediately after removing the belt and continuing to swim.
